Tuesday proved to be an emotional day for one Tottenham player, after he was finally given his chance to play for his country.

Djed Spence was already on the cusp of making history by becoming the first Muslim player to play for England, however Thomas Tuchel didn’t hand him any minutes against Andorra.

This changed in the 68th minute of England’s fine 5-0 win away from home against Slovakia, when he replaced Reece James to make his Three Lions debut.

The performances over the last 12 months from Spence had been very impressive, and he fully deserved his call up to be amongst the best players from his country.

Djed Spence’s emotional reaction to making England debut

While the Spurs man kept things very safe when he did take to the pitch, he helped keep England on the front foot in the World Cup qualifier. He made six passes into the final third in just 22 minutes on the pitch.

Clearly delighted with his personal acheivment, Spence took to Instagram after the game to share that his England debut has marked the ‘proudest day of his life’.

He said: “Today arguably the Greatest and Proudest day of my life. Honoured to make my England debut. A day I’ve dreamt of all my life & now has become a reality. GOD IS THE GREATEST!”

The full-back will be looking to take this good feeling back to North London when he returns to his club, where he is already proving to be extremely important for his new manager.

Spence a key player for Thomas Frank

Since Thomas Frank took over at Spurs, Spence has played every possible competitive minute so far, including 90 minutes in the Super Cup against PSG.

Despite also being able to play on the right of defence, this position is reserved for Spain international Pedro Porro, leaving Spence having to play on the left.

This has kept Destiny Udogie having to make his appearances from the bench so far, despite being a starter for the majority of his time in North London.

Spence will be looking to keep up his great start to the season, now for both club and country, when they make the short trip to take on West Ham on Saturday.
