Tottenham Hotspur loanee Djed Spence has lifted the lid on what his relationship with Antonio Conte was like.

The 23-year-old is currently spending the remainder of the campaign out on loan with Serie A side Genoa.

Antonio Conte’s Djed Spence comments

Tottenham made the signing of Spence back in the summer of 2022 and it was made clear he was not a player Conte approved of.

Speaking on the club’s pre-season tour in Asia, the Italian called Spence a ‘club signing’ when he got wind of the deal being made official.

And it was apparent he was not a player who would be in the plans of the Italian manager as he played a grand total of just 41 minutes under Conte.

Speaking to The Athletic about his relationship with the now-former Tottenham boss, Spence said: “I didn’t really have a relationship with him, to be honest. He’s a coach that has his way. I don’t think he has much of a relationship with his players. It’s come into training and train — and that’s pretty much it.”

It has to be said, regardless of how Spence’s Spurs time has panned out, the comments from Conte set the tone for how this signing was going to go.

Djed Spence Genoa statistics

Having made yet another loan move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spence now finds himself in Italy.

He had spent the first half of the term in the Championship with the high-flying Leeds United.

However, his loan deal was cut short and he made the move back to north London.

But after being used as part of the deal to bring in Dragusin from Genoa, Spence has gone on to make five appearances in Serie A.

Only three of those have come from the starting XI and he has now not started for them since the beginning of February.

He has played on both sides of the pitch at both left and right-wing-back, but it appears he may be struggling to nail down a spot in the starting XI.

And that has been the story of Spence’s career really since he left his loan spell with Nottingham Forest and joined Tottenham.
