Tottenham were beaten by Manchester United in the Premier League as Thomas Frank remains without a top-flight victory in 2026.

Goals from Bryan Mbuemo and Bruno Fernandes ensured a fourth straight win for the Red Devils, and in truth, they weren’t made to work anywhere near hard enough for the win.

Tottenham failed to add to their attacking ranks in the January transfer window, and the toothless nature of the latest Premier League performances is a bit of a concern.

After the drab performance at Old Trafford, former Tottenham and Manchester United player hammered one Spurs star who he felt let the team down yesterday.

Dimitar Berbatov slams Tottenham star

It will come as a surprise to absolutely nobody that the man who is the subject of the criticism from the former Spurs player is Cristian Romero.

From the moment he was sent off for a rash challenge on Casemiro, the writing was on the wall, with United simply toying with Tottenham before picking them off.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Berbatov said: “Today, it finished the moment they see the red card. In the form United have, it was going to be difficult for Spurs to get anything from the game with one man short. They’re not in a good position.

“Questions will be asked of Romero. They need to ask difficult questions, especially about the injured players, there was another injury today as well. Hopefully soon as possible, they need their players back if they want to win some points.”

Tottenham player will now have chance to stake captain claim

With the centre-back now set to miss four matches, it will be up to another Tottenham player to come in and lead the side – and that might be bad news for Romero.

If Spurs experience an upturn in performances and pick up some results, there is every chance that Thomas Frank could choose to stick with whoever he names as captain for the next four games.

Frank is facing a very big call over the captaincy, with Spurs simply unable to rely on Romero, who is becoming a little bit of a liability with his red card record.

Berbatov is right to slam Romero and it’s about time that he changed his way so that he can remain on the pitch more often and help Tottenham.
