David Ornstein has issued an update on the fitness situation of Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall.

Bergvall picked up an injury as Tottenham beat Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The 19-year-old played 62 minutes, but had to be taken off as he was in no position to continue.

Lucas Bergvall set for spell on sidelines due to injury

Ornstein wrote in The Athletic that the Sweden international will spend a spell on the sidelines.

Bergvall has injured his ankle, and Spurs are now assessing his injury before they can pinpoint when he is expected to return.

The midfielder has battled injury issues in recent months and will not want to be out for too long again.

The 19-year-old will be hoping to return in time for Sweden’s World Cup play-off semi-final against Ukraine on 26 March.

Speaking about his injury, Thomas Frank said: “It was a contact (injury), and they are assessing him now, so we will know more on Thursday.”

Will Tottenham enter the market for a Bergvall replacement?

Spurs have already added to their midfield ranks by signing Conor Gallagher in the January transfer window.

He has already made his debut and could become an important player in the coming weeks and months.

However, Bergvall’s injury leaves Spurs a midfielder short, and it remains to be seen what Frank’s plan of action is.

The Dane is already under pressure, so making new signings may just be what he needs to turn things around.

Tottenham could enter the market for a new midfielder, potentially on loan, to replace Bergvall.

If he is to be out for months and not weeks, it would be wise to sign a replacement until the end of the season.

They will be aware that they cannot waste any time in deciding, as the transfer window will be closing in under two weeks.

Frank may have certain names on his wishlist, and the recruitment team will potentially work with him to decide on the best plan of action.

It is important that if they sign a midfielder, he strengthens the playing eleven and is not an option to strengthen their depth.
