Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has spoken about his growing relationship in defence alongside Micky van de Ven.

The arrival of the Dutch centre-back has been a revelation at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season and he is certainly catching the eye.

He has already been labelled as the fasted recorded Premier League player in history, and it appears his centre-back partner is loving what he is seeing.

Romero loving life alongside Van de Ven

The Ange Postecoglou era has seen a number of new faces come through the door since the summer and, it could be argued, none bigger than the £35m defender.

It has not taken the Dutchman anytime whatsoever to settle into life in the Premier League and that can be seen through his regular spot in Postecoglou’s starting XI.

And it is apparent his Argentine teammate, Romero, is appreciating the opportunity to play alongside the promising youngster.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Romero said: “When you find that bond that you get with someone alongside you where you know they are always going to be there and as players we are very similar.

“We’re getting to know each other better after each game and training session. He’s a great lad, a great youngster, who is in great form. In my opinion and how I understand the game and speaking about current form I think that out of any defenders I could pick out here or anywhere else, Micky is one of the very best, if not the best currently in the Premier League.

“I’m very happy to be playing alongside him because both of us are growing and improving together as players so it’s really great to have him lining up next to me.”

A partnership for the future

Having Romero and Van de Ven playing for us at such a promising level is a real cause for optimism under Postecoglou.

They are both still of good age and could provide defensive cover for the years to come in north London.

But what is perhaps just as exciting is the backup options we now have in the squad with the arrival of Radu Dragusin.

Seeing Romero suspended and Van de Ven injured earlier in the campaign left Postecoglou putting together a makeshift backline of four full-backs.

Now, we have an exciting alternative in the Romanian if either of the starting centre-backs are to fall through injury.

It would be great to see Dragusin get some more minutes following his January move, but this is a partnership Postecoglou just can’t break up at the minute.
