Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has provided chairman Daniel Levy with a serious message on the club’s search for a trophy.

It has now been 16 years since we got our hands on a piece of major silverware, but the club seems to be heading in the right direction under Ange Postecoglou.

And despite being out of both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, the Argentine defender has offered some promising words on our trophy chances.

What Cristian Romero said to Daniel Levy

Romero has now been at Spurs for a couple of years now and is yet to get his hands anywhere near a piece of silverware.

But following Postecoglou’s arrival, Romero has been handed more responsibility after being made vice-captain alongside James Maddison.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the 25-year-old has spoken about the club’s trophy drought and what can be done to bring that to an end: “But these things [building success] can take time because I don’t think you can just start winning trophies from one day to the next,” he said.

“But if the chairman and the club owners continue with the positive and important changes, we will get closer to being able to really compete at the very top with clubs like Manchester City and Liverpool, as I think today they seem to be the ones who have made a difference in that sense.”

Tottenham heading in the right direction

There is no doubt crashing out of the Carabao Cup to Fulham was a huge disappointment and the game against Manchester City in the FA Cup was hugely underwhelming.

But we can see the progress taking place under Postecoglou already.

We sit just a couple of points off the top four and could end the weekend back in there, depending on Aston Villa’s result against Manchester United.

It is apparent Postecoglou is starting a project in north London with a number of young players coming through the doors since the summer.

Of course, the Premier League title is still there to be play for if we’re being ambitious, but a top-four finish would surpass the expectations many had before the season started.

What would be interesting then is how we would approach the cup games next season if we are also juggling European football.
