Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has now done something which only Virgil van Dijk has been able to do this season.

It has been a sensational campaign for the Argentine defender and it seems he may be finally getting the recognition he deserves.

Cristian Romero was handed the vice captaincy in the summer by Ange Postecoglou, and it is looking to be a masterstroke of a move.

Cristian Romero matching Van Dijk

The 26-year-old centre-back has now been playing in north London for a number of years, but it finally seems he has found his centre-back partner in Micky van de Ven.

Romero has been able to make 22 appearances in the Premier League and has returned four goals this term.

However, it is his defensive work which is gaining him the attention this time as Squawka state he and Van Dijk are the only defenders to make three or more last man tackles in the league.

This will come as a result of the high line which Postecoglou has instilled into this Tottenham side, but shows the cool, calm and collected version of Romero.

Cristian Romero discipline record

Since landing in north London, Romero has also carried the tag of being a bit of a hot head.

There is no doubting his discipline record had been pretty poor since he made the move over from Serie A.

However, this season has been different for the Argentine.

Perhaps being handed the vice captaincy by Postecoglou has provided him with a greater sense of responsibility.

But it certainly seems like something his finally switched in Romero’s head that is benefitting Spurs massively.

Putting aside his controversial red card picked up against Chelsea back in November, Romero has only been awarded four yellow cards.

And the last time he was shown a card came all the way back in December in the victory against Newcastle.

His discipline was the one aspect of his game which really let him down at times, but it seems he is putting that all behind him now.
