Tottenham Hotspur got back to winning ways in the Premier League at the weekend with a 3-1 win over Brentford at N17.

Spurs, boosted by their comeback League Cup victory against Coventry City, set about trying to make amends for their North London derby defeat.

Admittedly, Tottenham began badly, conceding in the first minute through Bryan Mbeumo.

However, they soon bounced back with Dominic Solanke’s first Spurs goal on eight minutes.

Brennan Johnson then put Tottenham in front midway through the second half, and James Maddison wrapped up the scoring five minutes from time.

All in all, it was a great display from Spurs, with one of their players receiving particular praise.

James Maddison has blown hot and cold since joining Tottenham a year ago, but he delivered what one pundit described as his best ever display in a Lilywhites shirt.

Here is what Troy Deeney, Alan Shearer, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Aaron Lennon said about the £40million man.

Troy Deeney

Troy Deeney named Maddison in his latest Premier League Team of the Week on BBC Sport.

“This is the game I’ve been waiting to see Madds do for a long, long time,” wrote Deeney.

“Even though Brentford scored early he got in there and said ‘right, watch what I do’. He created loads of chances.

“I’ve been critical of him at times, I felt he has gone too short and not put himself in difficult positions. This was the perfect response.”

Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer also named Maddison in his latest Premier League Team of the Week.

“A nicely taken goal and was back to his creative self as Spurs returned to winning ways,” he wrote on the Premier League website.

Gabriel Agbonlahor

Agbonlahor, like Shearer and Deeney, named Maddison in his latest team of the week.

He said on talkSPORT, as per their YouTube channel: “Forget about his goal, forget about his assist, his all-round game was outstanding.

“He was receiving the ball on the half turn, he was playing forward, he was playing risky passes, didn’t care about his pass completion, he was driving past players, floating past the midfield of Brentford.

“I thought it was the best game he has ever had in a Spurs shirt. Outstanding performance and deserves to be in the Team of the Week.”

Agbonlahor and Aaron Lennon

Agbonlahor also said on talkSPORT, while in conversation with Aaron Lennon (23/9/2024, 9:25am): “Watching the highlights, Maddison was outstanding, wasn’t he?

“Getting on the ball, playing forward. Took his goal very well. If Son had his shooting boots on, I am sure that Maddison would have got three or four assists. He was outstanding, wasn’t he?”

Lennon replied: “He has been outstanding all season, to be fair. He started the season like last season, and he is a fantastic player.

“He is one of those players you love to play with. He makes things happen, he plays forward.

“He was driving past players, he was reading the game well, lovely finish at the end, but, like you said, if the players in front of him had their shooting boots on, then he could have had three or four assists in that game.

“He is vital to everything that Spurs do, especially going forward. He is a key player, and Spurs need him to stay fit.”

How Alasdair Gold rated Maddison

Tottenham expert Alasdair Gold also believes Maddison had arguably his best ever game for Spurs, giving him a 10 out of 10 rating.

“Arguably his best performance in a Spurs shirt,” he wrote on football.london.

“Did well to intercept a pass before his shot was was saved for Solanke to fire home. He then won the ball back for Tottenham’s second goal and was constantly twisting, turning and creating.

“Got a deserved goal with a lovely chipped effort late on.”
