Tottenham Hotspur and Ange Postecoglou have made a flying start to pre-season having won both of their opening two matches with victories over Hearts and Queens Park Rangers.

Spurs comfortably saw off Hearts in their pre-season opener as Ange Postecoglou’s side won 5-1 in Edinburgh with several young players impressing.

Next up was a trip to Loftus Road in which they eventually saw off QPR, with goals from Yves Bissouma and Dane Scarlett securing a 2-0 triumph.

Tottenham’s squad have now jetted off to Asia for games in Japan and South Korea as they look to improve upon last season’s fifth-place finish.

But despite their promising start to pre-season, the club’s supporters will be hoping they can start to accelerate some more incoming.

So far, Archie Gray is the club’s only arrival, with the midfielder being signed from Leeds United in a deal worth around £40 million.

Archie Gray makes impressive start to life at Tottenham

The 18-year-old has been quick to impress though and has already earned himself praise from TalkSPORT pundit and former Chelsea defender, Scott Minto.

Gray has been handed starts in Tottenham’s first two pre-season matches and has looked solid on both occasions.

Minto said on TalkSPORT’s Sunday show (21/07/24 at 4:15 pm): “Well he [Postecoglou] has brought in the likes of Archie Gray and I think he started [pre-season] very well indeed.

“He’s a massive talent, but it’s going to be a lot to ask him to go straight into that Spurs side.”

Ange Postecoglou uses Archie Gray in an unfamiliar role

This praise comes despite Gray starting in the unfamiliar role of centre-back, with his favoured position being in midfield.

Currently, Ashley Phillips is Spurs’ only recognised centre-back, with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin all set to return late following international duty.

It is more than likely long-term the teenager will feature as a midfielder, especially following the departure of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Marseille.

As Minto points out, however, Postecoglou will need to manage the £40 million man given his age and lack of top-flight experience.

Bissouma is expected to remain Spurs’ first choice number six, but given Gray’s start to pre-season, the former Brighton man looks to have strong competition for his spot.
