Alasdair Gold says ‘unbelievable’ 25-year-old was ready to leave Tottenham before Ange Postecoglou arrived

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero was a potential player heading for the exit before Ange Postecoglou arrived.

The 2022/23 term under Antonio Conte was one to forget for everyone at Tottenham.

And it seems it was one which had Cristian Romero seriously considering his future at the club.

The Argentine centre-back has now racked up 86 appearances in a Spurs shirt and has three years remaining on his deal.

However, it appears the arrival of Ange Postecoglou in north London may well have just saved Spurs from losing their World Cup-winning defender.

Speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, Alasdair Gold claimed he thought the Argentine was considering his future after Conte’s difficult spell. He said: ‘We talked about the way the team was. I personally feel that Romero was potentially heading towards the exit at some point.

‘I just kind of feel like he wasn’t particularly happy at the club. And I think ambition-wise you know, this guy’s a World Cup winner. You can argue about his disciplinary record and whether we will get to see the best of him or not. But I kind of think that there was a feeling of, ‘I could be doing better than this. This is a bit of a kind of a mess here’.’

Romero reborn

Under Postecoglou, Romero has shown a greater sense of leadership and responsibility in cutting out his poor discipline record.

Of course, he will still have that debatable red card against him from the game against Chelsea earlier in the season.

However, his record, on the whole, has been much better with just four yellow cards awarded over the course of the Premier League season.

Along with James Maddison, Romero was handed the vice captaincy in the summer with Heung-min Son awarded the armband.

He has certainly taken on that leadership role under Postecoglou.

And it is interesting to see how well Romero – the World Cup winner – has taken to a manager with no experience in the top five leagues, especially after how he clearly felt towards Conte.

Spurs could have lost a player who Micky van de Ven has already hailed as ‘unbelievable‘, and that is a partnership no one will want to see broken up.
