Alasdair Gold says Tottenham loanee has made unexpected injury return after leaving in January

Tottenham Hotspur wing-back Ivan Perisic has made an unexpectedly early return from injury for Hajduk Split.

The Croatian had only made six appearances for Tottenham this season under Ange Postecoglou.

A long-term injury saw him sidelined, before leaving in January to return to his homeland.

Back in September, the Croatian sustained an ACL injury which required him to undergo surgery.

He did not feature for Spurs again and departed earlier in the year to make the loan move to Hajduk Split until the end of the season.

Postecoglou had suggested in January that the Croatian was unlikely to feature again this season for Spurs.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold has revealed the 35-year-old has now made a seriously early return from injury.

On the weekend, Perisic returned to the matchday squad with the Croatian side, to which Gold said: ‘Ivan Perisic back on the bench. I know he technically is not going to be part of Spurs beyond this summer, but I just thought it was nice to know. Back on the bench; didn’t play, but that’s back incredibly early.

‘I would say as soon as I kind of put that in my report the other day I had some people saying, ‘well he should have stayed at Spurs then’. I would say the difference between being fit for a Croatian league game and being fit for the Premier League are probably two different things. He has also been called up by the Croatia squad funnily enough for the end of the month.’

Although the wing-back has only left on a short-term loan, Perisic will not return to Hotspur Way in the summer.

The Croatian’s time at Spurs will be over at the end of the season with his contract expiring at the end of June.

And under the watch of Postecoglou, the 35-year-old simply does not fit in with where Tottenham are going.

The Lilywhites are eyeing young talents for the future, something which Perisic is not.

With Destiny Udogie locking down the spot at left-back, The Spurs News has been told the club are eyeing a versatile full-back in the summer.

It has to be said, though, it is a shame Perisic wasn’t fit under Postecoglou as he could have offered an attacking option off the bench.

In just 98 minutes of cameo displays for Spurs, Perisic was able to provide an assist in the Premier League off the bench.
