Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker predict where Tottenham will finish in the Premier League this season

Tottenham Hotspur have been tipped for a top four finish by both Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker following their victory on the weekend.

Victory over the Seagulls and defeat for Aston Villa on the Sunday meant we will go into the game on the weekend in fourth spot.

Despite Manchester United also entering the frame, it is apparent Spurs are seen as real competitions for the spot in the Champions League.

Tottenham tipped for top four

We have now earned a one-point cushion on Aston Villa following their defeat on the weekend with a game against Wolves coming up on Saturday.

It seems the race for fourth spot may have now been increased to a three horse race because of United’s victory.

But speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the former strikers have been speaking about Tottenham’s chances under Ange Postecoglou [29:45]: “They’re right in the mix to get that fourth spot,” said Shearer.

“And again, with Villa there and others pushing, but you’d have to say that they’ve got a great chance of doing that. And again, very much like Villa, if they were to grab that it would be a great season – first season for Postecoglou. I think everyone’s admired what he’s done there and the style of football – it’s really good to watch.”

“I definitely fancy Spurs for top four. I think they’ve got it within them as long as they don’t have a disastrous run with injuries. I really do think they can make Champions League football,” Lineker added.

Huge achievement under Postecoglou

We have to remember that this is the first season under Postecoglou, despite finding ourselves just seven points off the top this far into the term.

Although there can be no limit put on this team on the back of an impressive 2023/24 campaign so far, finishing in the top four would be a huge achievement all things considered.

We came into the season having just appointed a new manager and having sold our all-time record goalscorer.

Yet it feels as if we had an almost-perfect preparation for the season given how well the players have adapted to Postecoglou’s philosophy.

The likes of Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Micky van de Ven have been just some of the success stories from this season and look to be huge additions for the years to come.

Looking back at BBC Sport’s predictions for the season, none of their pundits had us in their top four which just shows how far we’ve come in such a short space of time.
