Tottenham made a blistering start to their clash against Premier League rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides went into the clash in search of an important win after a rather indifferent start to the campaign.

Ange Postecoglou’s side won three competitive games on the bounce after triumphs against Coventry City, Brentford and Qarabag, picking up some momentum.

That carried over into the early moments against Manchester United as Tottenham star Micky van de Ven ran the length of the pitch to set up Brennan Johnson.

It marked a quick start in ideal fashion for Spurs, with supporters singling out their rapid defender for some particular praise.

Tottenham fans praise Micky van de Ven for Man United assist

While Van de Ven’s pace is predominantly used for his recovery rate in the backline, it was the speed and control that was used best in attack against Manchester United.

Plenty of Tottenham fans gave praise to the Dutch international for the part he played in assisting Johnson for the goal.

“Best 2 cbs [centre-backs] itw [in the world] play for my club,” one supporter said, while another added: “So good man.”

Fans continued to give their praise to the defender, adding: “Micky van de Ven. World Class.”

There was also a comparison to former Tottenham star Gareth Bale, with one supporter stating: “Micky Van De Ven reminded me of Bale’s playing LB days.”

“MICKY I LOVE YOU,” one fan said, while another added: “What a run!! Mikey reminds me of Bale.”

Micky van de Ven is crucial to Tottenham’s success

It’s clear that Van de Ven is crucial to Tottenham in their hopes of a successful season under Postecoglou this year.

It’s not so much about his attacking ability, though it was awfully useful against Man United, but rather his pace in a defensive sense.

Due to the high line from Tottenham, his recovery rate is required to squeeze the pitch and stop teams from finding space behind.

That much was proven last season after his hamstring injury against Chelsea, which left him out of action and saw form take a downturn.

With Van de Ven back to his best, Spurs can expect to be back to their best as well.
