Tottenham Hotspur played part of one of the most thrilling games in Premier League history last night – but unfortunately came out on the losing side.
The scoreline of 4-1 to Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea side does not tell the full tale of the fixture. Ange Postecoglou‘s men were in the game all the way up to the 94th minute, despite being down to nine men.
Defenders Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were both sent off but despite this – Spurs‘ backline still put in a valiant effort.
However, someone who wasn’t so convinced was former Spurs defender – Jan Vertonghen.
Jan Vertonghen’s verdict on Ange Postecoglou’s tactic
Taking to X/Twitter whilst the game was in play, the former Belgium and Tottenham centre-half posted the following:
‘Highest defensive line I’ve ever seen in my life.’
This can’t be faulted. At times last night, Tottenham’s backline (more so what was left of it), was beyond the halfway line whilst defending.
It was a strange tactic from Postecoglou, that didn’t exactly work. Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson had a field day running in behind, and if it wasn’t for some incompetent finishing and Guglielmo Vicario – it could have very well been eight or nine goals shipped.

Spurs fans were also somewhat shocked with the Aussie manager‘s tactic but overall were impressed with their side’s resilience despite the weakened side.
Spurs were forced into fielding a more than makeshift backline, which led to some hilarious replies to Vertonghen…
‘Get your boots on lad,’ a first writes.
‘Do you wanna come and play in it,’ says another.
One adds: ‘Get your boots we are subbing you on.’
A final jokes: ‘Reckon you play CB on Saturday?’
Vertonghen would have probably been in with a shout had he’d been on that Spurs bench.
It was a remarkable game and the Belgian resurfacing may not have even surprised anyone given what happened on the night.
