Ange Postecoglou has slammed VAR’s decision not to send off Moises Caicedo for his challenge on Pape Matar Sarr in the first half.
Tottenham allowed another two-goal lead to slip, this time to their bitter rivals Chelsea who won 4-3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The defeat now leaves Postecoglou’s job in danger as his team imploded on yet another occasion this season.
Spurs looked in total control in the first 20 minutes as they raced into a 2-0 lead, however, an injury to Cristian Romero saw them setback. Another decisive moment in the game came when VAR made the controversial call not to overturn the onfield decision of no red card for Caicedo.

Ange Postecoglou fumes as VAR for no Caicedo red
Ange Postecoglou claims that VAR officials are shying away from making big decisions and overruling the on-field referee. Caicedo’s challenge on Sarr looked as obvious a red as they come but VAR opted not to intervene.
It’s obvious that the referee, Anthony Taylor, did not see the incident as he failed to award even a foul for the incident. VAR failing to get Taylor to review the incident just shows the lack of consistency in officiating in the Premier League.
After the match, Postecoglou told the media: “I think it’s kind of where we’re at with, the current state of football, where people are just frozen to make big decisions. I think referees don’t want to make them because they’ll go to VAR and VAR doesn’t want to intervene, so you’re kind of left in no man’s land. There’s a couple of decisions I thought today that definitely went against us.”
What the Premier League said about Caicedo’s tackle
The Premier League have confirmed that VAR officials in the Tottenham-Chelsea game did not deem Caicedo’s challenge on Sarr to be ‘serious foul play’. Subsequently sticking with the onfield decision not to send him off.
Premier League Match Centre claimed on X: “VAR checked for a potential red card following a challenge by Caicedo on Sarr and confirmed the referee’s call of no serious foul play.”
