Ange Postecoglou has delivered his verdict on Timo Werner’s Tottenham Hotspur debut at Manchester United yesterday.

Timo Werner grabbed an assist in the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford yesterday and it’s fair to say we saw the best and the worst of the German forward.

The 27-year-old only signed from RB Leipzig on loan just four days before the trip to Manchester.

But with Dejan Kulusevski missing out through illness, Ange Postecoglou was forced to chuck the forward straight into the starting XI.

Werner offered a constant threat down the left-hand side and took up some excellent positions, making Tottenham dangerous on the counter.

Yet, he did waste a decent opportunity in the first half. Werner was sent through on goal by Oliver Skipp but he dragged his shot wide on his weaker foot.

Nevertheless, Spurs fans are encouraged by his display considering the fact he only linked up with his teammates last week.

Postecoglou was also impressed with Werner, labelling his performance as ‘outstanding’ and claiming there is plenty more to come from the forward.

Speaking to Match of the Day 2, the Spurs boss singled out Werner for praise after admitting he had no choice but to chuck the German straight into the starting XI.

“I thought he was outstanding,” Postecoglou said. “He has only had two training sessions with us and it wasn’t a difficult call because we didn’t have many options to be fair.

“It’s not ideal but he’s a really good guy, he’s come in with a great attitude and wants to contribute and help this football team.

“I thought there were moments today you could see how exciting he will be once we get him up to speed.”

Werner struggled last time out in the Premier League with Chelsea but will be eager to prove a point this time around.

You could see glimpses of what he will offer in a Spurs shirt as he provided plenty of width and got himself in some dangerous positions.

It was also noticeable that Tottenham looked far less threatening going forward after he was replaced by Bryan Gil.

But it was evident that Werner had only started two games this season before his debut yesterday as he looked like a player who’s barely featured this term.

You’d imagine that he will only continue to improve as he builds up his fitness and adjusts to Postecoglou’s style of play. Grabbing an assist on his debut isn’t bad going though and he showed plenty of composure to hold up the ball and pick out Rodrigo Bentancur.
