Ange Postecoglou has singled out Pape Matar Sarr for praise after Tottenham Hotspur beat Manchester United on Saturday evening.

The Spurs boss spoke to Football.London after a thrilling 90 minutes of action on his home debut yesterday.

Tottenham picked up a deserved 2-0 win over United thanks to a brilliant second-half performance.

Sarr opened the scoring just after half-time as he finished off a sweeping Spurs move down the right-hand side.

The 20-year-old replaced Oliver Skipp in the starting line-up after the 2-2 draw at Brentford last weekend and it’s fair to say that he’s impressed his boss.

Postecoglou praises ‘brilliant’ Sarr

Speaking to the media after yesterday’s win, Ange Postecoglou waxed lyrical about Sarr’s quality and work-rate.

“Yeah, brilliant,” he said. “He’s been great from the moment I arrived. He’s got a great energy about him, but he’s got quality there too.

“He’s one of those midfielders who causes the opposition real problems because whether it’s him running with the ball or without the ball, he runs forward, he runs aggressively and he disrupts the opposition.

“He’s just got a great temperament for a young guy. So really pleased for him.”

Sarr caught the eye during pre-season and probably only missed out on starting against Brentford due to Skipp’s brace in Barcelona just days before.

The midfielder made the switch to Spurs from FC Metz back in the summer of 2021, with Tottenham paying £15 million for him before sending him back to his former club on a season-long loan.

He bagged his first goal for the club yesterday and has looked impressive since Postecoglou took over in June.

Sarr could become a key player this season and he seems well-suited to Postecoglou’s system.

It’s clear the Aussie boss is also a huge fan of the youngster as he’s praised him consistently throughout the summer.

At this stage, it seems to be a direct battle between him and Skipp for a role alongside Maddison in the Spurs side.
